Hey guys! I have recently been introducing by sons to various foods. They now have six teeth and have new teeth coming in, and we felt like they were ready to explore the world of solid foods! As a new mother who is learning as she goes, I started off giving them mushed up avocado. Next, I implemented steamed and mushed carrots. After that, I started purchasing organic baby food for them to eat.
Then I learned about a new theory called Baby Led Weaning. My take is that the basic idea behind this is that nutrition should mainly come in the form of milk (mommy’s milk or formula, depending on what you use) for the first 12 or so months of the child’s life. It goes on to explain that babies should experience the texture of foods and only eat foods that they are able to eat, without the need for pureeing them.
I am no expert. But I tend to agree with much of the principles taught in Baby Led Weaning. But I also think that there are certain foods that provide quality nutrition, which is beneficial mushed up. So as of now, I have made up my own approach, and I give my boys lots of milk, some pureed food, and some non-pureed food.
Some ideas I have given my sons:
*Sautéed chopped spinach (sautéed in coconut oil)
*Slices of cucumbers and celery (sliced in a way that is not a chocking hazard)
*Scrambled eggs (cooked in either grassfed butter or coconut oil)
*Sliced blueberries
*Etc.
We are still new at this whole parenting deal, as I stated, and I am learning as I go! But it is a fun adventure, and I am always open to learning more!
Here is my newest recipe I made up for my sons. They loved it! I knew most babies love sweet potatoes, and I had given my sons some organic sweet potato baby food. But I know that food is most nutritious when it’s fresh, and sweet potatoes tend to have higher concentrations of carbohydrates, which we know breaks down into sugar in the body. Hence, I created the Bulletproof Sweet Potato Baby Food, which I hope adds a smile to those of you familiar with Bulletproof Coffee. For those of you unfamiliar with this term, it is adding grassfed butter to the recipe. The healthy fats help to counteract the carbohydrates and help to stabilize the blood sugar.
So here is this simple recipe!
INGREDIENTS:
1 organic sweet potato (baked)
2 tablespoons of grassfed butter
1 dash of organic cinnamon
1 tablespoon of organic milk
1 tablespoon of organic cream
DIRECTIONS:
- Slice the baked sweet potato and place it in a Vistamix or blender. Leave the skin on the sweet potato, as it has lots of good nutrients in it. (Avoid using a plastic blender, unless it is BPA free, as it may contain toxic chemicals in it, which could leach out into your food.)
- Place all the other ingredients into your Vistamix/blender. Start blending on low, and gradually go up until you have an even consistency.
My husband and I tasted this recipe, and we both agreed it’s delicious! My sons agreed, too! 🙂
